Gran Canaria in a nutshell
Gran Canaria is a natural Paradise shaped by lava, water and air. Its volcanic origin and its special climate with more than five different microclimates in only 1.560 square kilometers shaped many different breathtaking landscapes: sand dunes, craters, cliffs, canyons, dry and humid forests. With two Natural Parks and over 30 protected natural areas, more than half of the surface of the island is under protection. All these many different landscapes are the reason that Gran Canaria is called "the miniature continent".
Because of what is said to be the best climate in the world Gran Canaria has developed a solid touristic infrastructure. You can do almost anything you can think about when you hear the word holidays. 5-star hotels, cheaper ones, all-inclusive, only adults...and as well ass all sort of activities: surfing, diving, water sports, hikings, mountain biking. And a very active cultural life thanks to the character of the Canary people. There are as many Gran Canaria things to do as you can imagine. And best of all: you can still combine all of this with a big city tourism in a big european city.
The capital city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was the first colonial city ever to be founded in the Atlantic. The Spanish Catholic Kings put all their efforts in building a big Spanish city after conquering the islands in the 15th century. Christoph Columbus was one of the first witnesses of the foundation of the city since he stayed in Gran Canaria just before leaving to discover the new world. If you like history you will find in Las Palmas a great place to discover the start of Spains greatest years as the "empire where the sun never sets". Las Palmas is today one of the top 10 cities in Spain and has a vivid cultural life, with many great festivals of all kinds and a varied cultural offer every week.
